Dhanteras 2025: Day and Date
The festival of Dhanteras will be celebrated on Saturday, 18th October 2025, on the Trayodashi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik. According to belief, buying new utensils or precious metals on this day brings good fortune. Dhanteras marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali festival, dedicated to Lord Dhanvantari and Yamraj. This year’s Pooja Muhurat is from 7:16 PM to 8:20 PM.
Dhanteras 2025: Significance & History
During the Samudra Manthan, Lord Dhanvantari, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, emerged from the ocean holding a pot of nectar. His appearance symbolises health, healing, and the origin of Ayurveda.
Another legend says that on this day, Lord Vishnu appeared in his Vamana avatar to humble King Bali and restore balance between gods and demons — marking the victory of light, wisdom, and prosperity.
Dhanteras 2025: Remedies
On Dhanteras, light 13 earthen lamps inside and 13 outside your home to remove darkness and invite Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber.
Offer a pair of cloves to Goddess Lakshmi during puja from Dhanteras to Diwali for financial peace.
After Lakshmi-Ganesh and Kuber puja, take 21 unbroken rice grains, wrap them in red cloth, and place them in your safe for prosperity.
Buy coriander seeds on Dhanteras and offer them to Goddess Lakshmi on Diwali. Sow a few seeds at home for continued happiness and abundance.
What to Buy on Dhanteras
Buying gold, silver, or new utensils is considered most auspicious on Dhanteras. You can also bring home Lakshmi–Ganesha idols, a new broom, or even new electronics or vehicles, symbolising renewal and prosperity.
What Not to Buy on Dhanteras
Avoid purchasing glass items, black-coloured goods, aluminium utensils, or sharp objects like scissors and knives, as they are considered inauspicious on this day.
