Introduction

India is a land of festivals, and Diwali is one of the most loved celebrations of the year. Also known as Deepawali, the Festival of Lights brings families together to celebrate hope, happiness, and new beginnings. Diwali is observed on Amavasya, the New Moon day in the Hindu month of Kartik. People clean and decorate their homes, light diyas, make rangoli, exchange gifts, and worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. Diwali is also a time when many people pray for financial stability, peace at home, good health, and success in their work. Diwali 2026 will be celebrated on Sunday, 8 November 2026. The five-day celebration includes Dhanteras, Narak Chaturdashi, Diwali, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj. Festival dates may vary slightly according to regional traditions and the local Panchang.

Diwali 2026: Five-Day Festival Dates

1. Dhanteras – Friday, 6 November 2026

Dhanteras marks the beginning of the Diwali festivities. It is associated with Lord Dhanvantari, the deity connected with health and Ayurveda, as well as Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber. Many families buy utensils, gold, silver, or other useful items on this day as a traditional symbol of prosperity. People also light a diya in the evening and pray for the health and well-being of their families. Dhanteras Puja Timings-05:49pm to 8:13pm

2. Choti Diwali/ Narak Chaturdashi- Saturday, 7th November

Choti Diwali is associated with the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon Narakasura. It reminds us that goodness can overcome negativity. People traditionally take an early morning oil bath, light diyas, clean their homes, and prepare festive food. As Narak Chaturdashi and Diwali fall close together in the 2026 calendar, check your local Panchang for the correct observance and rituals.

3. Diwali – Sunday, 8 November 2026( fron 11:28 am to 9 November 2026, 12:30pm)

Diwali is the main day of the festival. Families worship Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha, and, in some traditions, Lord Kuber. Homes and workplaces are decorated with lamps and flowers, and prayers are offered for prosperity, wisdom, and happiness.

Diwali is also linked to the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile and his victory over Ravana. According to the traditional story, people lit lamps to welcome him home.

These timings are based on the New Delhi Panchang. If you live in another city, check the local timings before performing the puja.

4. Govardhan Puja / Annakut

Govardhan Puja is dedicated to Lord Krishna and the protection he offered to the people of Vrindavan. The festival also expresses gratitude towards nature and the resources that support life.

Devotees prepare a variety of vegetarian dishes and offer them to Lord Krishna. This offering is known as Annakut. Families pray for food, shelter, and the well-being of their loved ones.

The date should be confirmed with your local Panchang because regional calendars may differ.

5. Bhai Dooj

Bhai Dooj celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters apply a tilak to their brothers' foreheads and pray for their happiness, health, and long life. Brothers often give gifts as a gesture of love and care.

The festival is a reminder to value family relationships and make time for the people who matter to us.

Diwali 2026: Significance and History

Diwali has several stories and traditions associated with it. Together, they share a message of hope, goodness, and new beginnings.

The Return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya

One of the best-known stories connects Diwali with Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. People are said to have welcomed him by lighting rows of oil lamps. This tradition represents the victory of good over evil and light over darkness.

Goddess Lakshmi and Prosperity

Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped as the goddess of wealth, abundance, and prosperity. On Diwali, people clean their homes, light diyas, and offer prayers to welcome her blessings.

For many families, Lakshmi Puja is also a chance to reflect on how they earn, save, and use money. The festival encourages gratitude and a fresh start.

Diwali 2026: Traditional Remedies

Many people follow traditional remedies during Diwali to pray for prosperity, business growth, and relief from astrological difficulties. These practices are rooted in faith and tradition; their results are not guaranteed.

  • On Diwali Poojan, take a black turmeric knot, 5 betel nuts, 5 kaudi (cowrie shells), a red cloth, and a small silver bowl/plate. Purify the black turmeric with incense and wash kaudi with Ganga Jal. Tie all items in red cloth and place the bundle in a silver bowl during puja. After pooja, leave it overnight and store it in a safe the next day to maintain Goddess Lakshmi’s grace.

  • Begin from Diwali — visit a Lakshmi, Durga, or any goddess temple, light a ghee lamp, and offer homemade kheer continuously for 40 days to attract blessings. If missed, start on the first Friday of Shukla Paksha.

  • For new business growth: keep a glass of water near your head while sleeping; discard it outside the next morning. Repeat regularly.

  • Offer water to the Peepal tree on Amavasya for relief from Shani Dosha and Kaal Sarpa Dosha.

  • On Diwali night, light a mustard oil lamp under the Peepal tree and return home unseen.

Please follow fire-safety precautions when lighting diyas. Avoid leaving lamps unattended, and do not place an open flame near dry leaves or other flammable materials.
