Understanding Planetary Transit (Gochar) and the Vedha rule in Vedic astrology, and how planetary movements influence life events.

In Vedic astrology, planetary transit (Gochar) simply means the movement of planets from one zodiac sign to another. Nothing in the universe is static; every planet keeps moving continuously in its orbit.

A Janam Kundli (birth chart) is the map of the sky at the exact time and place of birth. It shows where the planets were located at that moment. However, after birth the planets keep moving. When a planet changes its position in the zodiac, its influence on human life also changes. These changing planetary influences are called planetary transit in Vedic astrology.

Astrologers study planetary transits to understand when certain events or experiences may occur in a person's life.

Planetary Transit in Vedic Astrology from the Moon Sign

In Indian astrology, most transit calculations are done from the Moon sign (Janma Rashi).

The reason is that the Moon represents the mind and emotional state. Our thoughts, reactions, and decisions are strongly influenced by the mind. Since the mind guides our actions, transits from the Moon sign help astrologers understand how planetary movements may influence a person’s life experience.

Another reason is that the Moon is the closest celestial body to Earth, and its movement has a strong psychological influence.

However, professional astrologers usually check transits from both the Moon sign and the Lagna (Ascendant).

  • Moon sign shows mental experience and emotional impact

  • Lagna shows actual events and physical circumstances

Transit Vedha Rule in Planetary Transit in Vedic Astrology

While analysing planetary transit in Vedic astrology, the Vedha rule is very important.

Vedha means obstruction or interruption. Sometimes a planet may be transiting through an auspicious position from the Moon sign, but if another planet occupies a specific obstructing house, the positive results may get reduced.

In simple terms:

A good transit may not give full results if Vedha is present.

There are a few important exceptions to this rule:

Sun and Saturn do not create Vedha for each otherMoon and Mercury do not create Vedha for each other

Another important point is related to the Sun. Mercury and Venus remain very close to the Sun in the zodiac.

  • Mercury never moves more than 28 degrees away from the Sun

  • Venus never moves more than 48 degrees away from the Sun

Because of this, Mercury and Venus cannot create Vedha for the Sun. Only Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Rahu, and Ketu can create Vedha for the Sun.

Upachaya Houses in Planetary Transit in Vedic Astrology

In Vedic astrology, 3rd, 6th, 10th, and 11th houses are called Upachaya houses.

These houses represent growth through effort and experience. Malefic planets such as:

  • Saturn

  • Mars

  • Rahu

  • Sun

often give better results when transiting through these houses.

For example, Saturn transit in the 11th house can bring gains and long-term achievements.

Example of Planetary Transit in Vedic Astrology

Now, let's understand planetary transit in Vedic astrology with a practical example.

Suppose a person has:

Pisces Ascendant (Meen Lagna)Moon sign Aries (Mesh Rashi)

On 10 May 2022, Saturn transited into Aquarius.

From the Moon sign Aries, Aquarius becomes the 11th house, which is considered an auspicious position for Saturn.

Normally, this transit may bring:

• gains and achievements• professional progress• support from social circle• fulfilment of goals

However, when we apply the Vedha rule, we see that the obstructing houses for Saturn are the 5th, 9th, and 12th from the Moon sign.

In this example:

• Moon is placed in the 5th house• Jupiter and Venus are placed in the 12th house

Because planets occupy the Vedha houses, Saturn may give moderate results instead of very strong positive results.

At the same time, Saturn is transiting in Aquarius, which is its own sign and Mool Trikona sign, making the planet strong.

Saturn also connects with Jupiter and Venus, which are friendly planets. This may balance the effects to some extent.

Only the Moon in the 5th house may create some emotional fluctuations or delays.

This example shows how astrologers combine transit position, Vedha rule, and planetary strength to interpret planetary transit results.

Role of Dasha in Transit Results

Another important rule in astrology is that transit alone does not create events.

Transit usually activates events only when the relevant dasha or antardasha is running.

Astrologers often say:

“Dasha decides the time period, while transit triggers the event.”

Therefore, proper prediction requires studying both planetary transit and dasha periods together.

Final Thoughts on Planetary Transit in Vedic Astrology

Planetary transit or Gochar in Vedic astrology is a very useful tool to understand the timing of events. However, accurate prediction requires analysing several factors together:

• birth chart placements• Moon sign transit• Lagna transit• Vedha rule• planetary strength• dasha and antardasha

When all these factors are considered together, astrology can provide deeper insight into life events and timing.
