Navratri 2026: Dates, Significance and Traditional Remedies
Navratri is one of those festivals that brings people together through faith, family traditions, prayers and celebration. From visiting temples and observing fasts to decorating the house and worshipping Maa Durga, everyone has their own way of celebrating these nine nights.
Shardiya Navratri 2026 is already underway, so if you are planning your prayers or looking for traditional Navratri remedies, this is a good time to explore the festival's significance and the customs followed by devotees.
In this guide, we will look at the dates of Navratri 2026, the story behind the festival, its spiritual significance and some traditional practices you can follow during this auspicious period.
Shardiya Navratri 2026: Start Date and End Date
Shardiya Navratri began on Sunday, 11 October 2026, and the festival concludes with Vijayadashami on Tuesday, 20 October 2026.
Navratri means "nine nights" and is dedicated to the worship of Maa Durga and her nine forms, collectively known as Navdurga. Devotees offer prayers, observe fasts, chant mantras and take part in different religious traditions throughout the festival.
The exact dates of certain rituals can vary according to the lunar calendar, regional customs and local panchang. If you are planning a specific puja, check the timings for your city rather than relying on an old calendar.
What Is the Significance of Navratri?
Navratri is a festival of devotion, strength and the victory of good over evil. Each of the nine forms of Maa Durga represents a different aspect of divine feminine energy.
For many devotees, these nine days are also a time to slow down, reflect on their lives and reconnect with their spiritual practices. Some people observe fasts, while others focus on prayer, meditation, charity or spending time with family.
You do not need to follow elaborate rituals to make the festival meaningful. Even a few quiet moments of prayer, gratitude or reflection can become a part of your Navratri routine.
The Story of Maa Durga and Mahishasura
According to Hindu tradition, Mahishasura was a powerful demon who became a threat to the gods. Unable to defeat him, the gods came together, and their divine energies gave rise to Goddess Durga.
Maa Durga fought Mahishasura and defeated him after a fierce battle. Her victory represents the triumph of good over evil and the power of courage, determination and divine feminine energy.
This is why Maa Durga is also known as Mahishasuramardini, the slayer of Mahishasura.
For devotees, the story carries a deeper message: difficult situations can be faced with courage, patience and faith. It reminds us that strength is not always about fighting others; sometimes, it is about overcoming our own fears and negative habits.
The Nine Forms of Maa Durga Worshipped During Navratri
Each day of Navratri is traditionally associated with one form of Maa Durga.
Day 1 – Maa Shailputri: Associated with strength and a firm foundation.
Day 2 – Maa Brahmacharini: Represents devotion, discipline and patience.
Day 3 – Maa Chandraghanta: Symbolises courage and protection.
Day 4 – Maa Kushmanda: Associated with creation, energy and vitality.
Day 5 – Maa Skandamata: Represents motherhood, care and compassion.
Day 6 – Maa Katyayani: Symbolises courage and determination.
Day 7 – Maa Kaalratri: Associated with the destruction of darkness and fear.
Day 8 – Maa Mahagauri: Represents peace, purity and serenity.
Day 9 – Maa Siddhidatri: Associated with spiritual growth and the attainment of wisdom.
The order of worship is widely followed, although specific observances may vary by tradition.
Kalash Sthapana During Navratri
Kalash Sthapana, also known as Ghatasthapana, marks the beginning of Navratri for many devotees. A sacred pot is established as part of the worship, symbolising auspiciousness and the invocation of divine energy.
For Shardiya Navratri 2026, Kalash Sthapana took place on 11 October. Since the festival is already underway, there is no need to use the original installation timings as if they were still upcoming.
If you are reading this during the festival, you can continue with your family's usual daily puja, prayers and offerings. For specific rituals or muhurat-based observances, consult a reliable local panchang or your family priest.
Traditional Navratri Remedies and Spiritual Practices
Many families follow traditional upay/tonay-totke during Navratri as part of their faith. These practices may involve prayers, mantra chanting, offerings or simple acts of devotion.
The remedies below reflect popular religious customs. Their outcomes are matters of spiritual belief, and they should not be treated as guaranteed ways to attract money, solve relationship problems or remove every obstacle.
On any Saturday during Navratri, bring 11 peepal leaves before sunrise and write Ram on it with vermilion, make a garland of them and offer it to Lord Rama to remove obstacles.
Chant Shri Ram Raksha strotra, Durga Shaptashati, and Shri Sookat path for 9 days during Navratri to gain money, achieve success, and remove obstacles.
During Navratri, offer a beetal leaf with 7 rose petals at the Temple of the Goddess on all 9 days to remove obstacles and get prosperity.
Take two strands of a broom and tie them in the reverse position with a blue thread and place it in the southwest corner of the house to enhance love and affection between the husband and the wife.
Take a jute coconut, put vermilion tikka on it, tie a red thread (Kalava) around it seven times, and offer rice grain on it and offer this coconut to Hanuman ji in any temple.
Recite Hanuman Chalisa and Sunderkand Path every day during Navratri to remove the obstacles. Recite Hanuman Chalisa 21, 51, 108 times to fulfil your wish.
During Navratri, offer the clay lion to Maa Durga on Wednesday. All the work is completed.
During Navratri, offer a red flag at the Temple of the Goddess on any day.
Offer the pan to Hanuman Ji for 9 days in Navratri.
During Navratri, write the name of Lord Ram on a Peepal leaf, and along with it, offer something sweet in front of Lord Hanuman's idol. This remedy is to be performed continuously for nine days. Soon, you will receive financial gains.
To please Goddess Lakshmi during Navratri, every day for 9 days, offer a pair of cloves along with a rose to Goddess Durga. This clove remedy is considered highly effective for attracting wealth during Navratri. Performing this ritual brings prosperity to your home and fills your mind with positive thoughts.
To please Lord Hanuman during Navratri, you can also perform a clove remedy. On Tuesday or Saturday during Navratri, light a mustard oil lamp in front of Lord Hanuman and add a pair of cloves to the lamp. Then, recite the Hanuman Chalisa. After that, in a conversational tone, express your problem or wish to Lord Hanuman. It is believed that your plea will soon be heard in the court of Lord Hanuman.
During the nine days of Navratri, every morning, you should burn cloves and camphor and spread the smoke throughout your house. Doing this removes negativity from your home and increases the flow of positive energy. It also brings peace to the household.
